The AVIS project has reached an important milestone with the successful completion of its first pilot, carried out at the Port of Seville on the Guadalquivir River between 9 and 13 March.

This campaign marked the first time the AVIS prototype was tested in real operational conditions on an inland waterway. The system was deployed onboard and used during live navigation, moving the project from theoretical analysis and simulation into practical application.

Pilot scope

The pilot evaluated the full AVIS system, integrating GNSS positioning, integrity monitoring, and Copernicus‑based services directly with onboard navigation systems. The objective was to assess performance, reliability, and operational relevance in a real maritime environment.

Key observations

The pilot produced encouraging results across all tested components:

  • GNSS and Copernicus equipment operated continuously and reliably throughout the campaign

  • Both ASGARD receivers provided uninterrupted positioning and integrity information, with one receiver also delivering OSNMA data

  • Protection Levels were sufficiently low to support operational decision‑making and were positively assessed by the vessel’s master

  • Alerts were correctly triggered when the vessel was intentionally taken outside the navigable area

  • Copernicus‑based alerts were delivered in advance and effectively used during navigation

  • The Tresco onboard software performed as expected, with the ECDIS system smoothly receiving inputs from the AVIS prototype and displaying Protection Levels correctly on screen

From study to operation

With this first pilot, AVIS has successfully transitioned from studies and simulations to real operational use on inland waterways. The images below provide a closer look at the pilot activities in Seville and illustrate how the AVIS prototype performed during real navigation scenarios.

Further pilots and technical insights will follow as the project continues to validate AVIS capabilities across additional operational environments.
